Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a device equipped with tiny needles to prick tiny holes into the outermost layer of your dermis. These punctures aren’t visible to the eye, but they stimulate your body’s healing mechanisms. In the first days following the treatment, circulation in the treated areas improves as new tissue forms as a result of the treatment. Growth factors rush to the area to give you a near-immediate glow.

With time, your skin also starts to produce more collagen, a natural protein that forms the foundation of all tissue and boosts your complexion’s smooth, tight appearance.

As you get older, your skin naturally produces less collagen. Microneedling helps restore your natural levels and turn back the clock on aging.

Why should I consider microneedling treatments?

Microneedling is a potential solution to a number of skin complaints, including:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Dull complexion
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Acne scarring or keloid scarring
  • Sun spots and irregular pigmentation
  • Large pores

The wounds created by microneedling trigger healing, but not scarring, so it’s appropriate for most skin types.

What should I expect during a microneedling session?

Microneedling treatments last just about 30 minutes. After cleansing your skin, Dr. Mei applies a topical numbing cream, if needed, to make the session as comfortable as possible. The microneedling device glides smoothly over your entire face, with extra attention to areas of thicker or scarred tissue. You may notice some sensation of prickling, but most people tolerate the treatment quite well.

Should I schedule downtime following my microneedling sessions?

Expect to have some redness and irritation that’s similar to a mild sunburn for a few days after treatment. These side effects fade on their own, and you don’t need to schedule any formal downtime after your session, but may prefer to take it easy for a few days. Some people may experience tightness, itching, peeling, tenderness, and rough skin for a few days as well. Dr. Mei gives you thorough aftercare directives as to how to best care for your skin right after treatment.
