You Don't Have to Live with Unsightly Scars — Here's How to Get Rid of Them

The average human skin covers a whopping 22 square feet, making it the human body’s largest organ. And as your first line of defense, there’s little question that your skin is hard-working, shielding you from bacteria, invading objects, the sun, and anything else that comes its way.

And the evidence of this work can often pile up in the form of scarring, especially on highly exposed areas of your skin. Whether acne wreaked havoc on your skin or you have an unsightly scar from a previous accident, we can restore your skin to a smooth surface with our innovative scar reduction laser technology.

At Naples Medical Care in Long Beach, California, Weiping Sarah Mei, MD, and her team offer the very latest tools to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. From body contouring to wrinkle reduction, our office is equipped with the very latest technology, including the industry-leading Icon™ laser by CynoSure®, which does a fantastic job of getting rid of unsightly scars.

The makings of a scar

To better understand how our Icon laser technology tackles scar tissue, it’s helpful to review what happens in your skin when a scar forms. When your skin is breached, your tissue jumps into action to shore up this weak area in its defenses. At the heart of this effort is collagen, which is the protein responsible for the support in your skin.

As your body responds to the injury, it floods the area with these connective fibers, which is what creates the altered tissue.

With acne scarring, the pockmarks develop when inflammation causes breaks in the walls of your follicles. Depending on the severity of the acne, these breaks can occur deep in your tissue, which leads to scarring.

Fighting fiber with fiber

To clear away the scar tissue, we turn to the Icon laser, which delivers short pulses of laser light into the tough tissue to break it apart. These light pulses are highly targeted, which means they don’t affect the skin surrounding your scar.

Once your scar tissue breaks down, your body responds in a far less dramatic way than the precipitating incident or condition. Since your body doesn’t register this treatment as an emergency, it sends in enough collagen to rebuild your skin normally.

Ultimately with the Icon, we’re breaking down tough collagen fibers and encouraging your body to rebuild your skin with new collagen fibers that lead to a smoother surface.

The timeline for erasing the past

There’s no single timeline for our Icon treatments because it depends on the extent of the scarring we’re addressing. In most cases, Dr. Mei recommends a series of treatments, which we space apart by several weeks to allow time for your body to flush away the old fibers and respond with healthier tissue.

The treatments are short — usually less than an hour — and there’s no downtime afterward. And the Icon is equipped with a cooling system, so you should be perfectly comfortable throughout your treatments.
