What Causes Age Spots and How Can I Get Rid of Them?

If your skin, especially the highly visible areas, is looking more like a roadmap of your life rather than a clean, blank slate, welcome to the inevitable world of aging. As wrinkles and age spots conspire to rob you of your youthful skin, we at Naples Medical Care have just the tools you need to clear the way forward to a more even, vibrant complexion.

As skin rejuvenation specialists, Dr. Weiping Sarah Mei and her team have armed themselves with the latest laser therapies that breathe new life into aging skin. Leading the charge is our Cynosure Icon™ 1540 fractional laser and IPL, which directs precise energy into your skin to break up age spots, helping undo some of the effects of sun damage.

Read on the explore how ages spots develop and, more importantly, what we can do about them.

A matter of time and exposure

As we hinted above, age spots are largely a result of exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Your skin plays an incredibly important role in shielding you from the outside world. Your skin is your first line of defense. And one of its most important mandates is to prevent radiation from the sun’s UV rays from harming you.

To do this, your skin contains melanin, which is designed to absorb and diffuse light. When you expose your skin to UV rays, your melanin jumps into action and your pigment darkens as it takes in the radiation.

This type of exposure may have led to a tan in your earlier years, but as you get older, your melanin may begin to cluster - age spots.

And this typically happens on areas of your skin that are more exposed, such as your face, chest, backs of your hands, arms, shoulders, and legs.

Restoring order

If you’re tired of dealing with age spots that mottle the surface of your skin, you may benefit from the unique laser system in which we fight light with light. With our Icon laser, we deliver light energy into your pigment, to break up the area of pigmentation, after which your body flushes away the pigment, leaving healthier, smoother skin in their wake. ICON typically treats a person with Fitzpatrick skin type I-III.

The treatments themselves are noninvasive as the light energy travels through to your dermis without harming your epidermis. Depending upon the size of the area we need to address or the number of age spots, you may need one or more treatments, which typically last an hour or so.

Over the weeks following your Icon treatments, your results gradually reveal themselves as your body works to get rid of the old cells and rebuild healthier, more evenly toned skin. Most of our patients enjoy optimal results within two to four months after their treatments.

Of course, you need to maintain these results, which means being especially mindful of exposing your skin to the sun going forward. Hats and sunscreen are de rigueur to guard your smooth complexion.

If you’d like to know the ICON treatment is for you and to get started banishing age spots from the surface of your skin, simply give us a call. Or you can use the online scheduling tool to set up an appointment.
